Politics
I am attuned to politics and unabashidly liberal. I cried in happy gratitude when Obama won the election. I follow politics on TV but am also an avid reader online of the Washington Post, POLITICO, The Nation, NY Times, Mother Jones, and Huffington Post to name a few.
I welcome political debate, but am not the least bit interested in exchanging insipid talking points. Politics is not entertainment, not to me.

I once went on a date with a man I was very anxious to impress. During the meal a fly became pesky and buzzed around the table top. In an attempt at humor I snapped my teeth at the fly, immitating a dog we'd seen earlier in the day.
You guessed it. I caught and severed the juicey little number between my front teeth, the head half fell to the white table cloth and whirled around in a death dance. I spit out the bottom half, politely of course, into my napkin, then let out a howl of laughter, (hmmm, not so polite). (and truth be told, I was attempting to dislodge any recalcitrant fly wings or legs that may still reside in my oracle piehole).
Jeffery didn't bat an eyelash, no smile, no comment. Too bad, I'd just been thinking he was a real man's man because he didn't raise his pinky while sipping tea. I haven't heard from him since the floods in New Orleans.
I ended the date as soon as possible. Life's too short to spend time with someone who doesn't find that incident laughable, worth at least a smile or an umph!
So, if you don't find humor in that story, log off now because it probably won't get any better for you than that!S & LITERATURE

The brain, as it forms (formats?) accomodates this type of learning; so literally, learning how we think and how language & speech impact how we think designs the brain we end up with.

What does Blue Dog Democrat mean?
Who are the Blue Dog Democrats? In theory, they are a caucus of moderate to conservative Democrats in the House, most of them hailing from rural and suburban swing districts. As Republican members melted away in 2006 and 2008, many were replaced by Blue Dogs, who essentially promised to be like Republicans, only anti-war and protectionist and economically populist.

A Pair of Pants? Why always with the Pair of? Here's an explaination from Smokey Stover, a contributor from the blogosphere:
The shortest answer is that "pant" refers to a trouser leg, or pantleg, and since they alwa;ys come in twos, the usual word is pants.
One historical change is that some garments that started out with long pantlegs have had them shortened in increments in successive periods. Thus, at one time (18th-early 19th cent.) some women wore an undergarment with long, loose pantlegs under their long skirts. These were called pantaloons. As skirts got shorter, so did the garments underneath. In the 1930s women wore an undergarment with loose pantlegs gathered at the knee, somewhat resembling the general character of men's knickerbockers, which English ladies naturally called knickers. American women called them "Bloomers," after Amelia Bloomer who promoted the garment, although she didn't invent it. And they soon started getting shorter, too, so that what was left was so abbreviated that the pantlegs were only nominal, and the garment was given a name indicating the abbreviation, "panties," almost always used int he plural except in the garment trade. And you know the rest.
When the garment lost the pantlegs altogether it continued to be called "panties," and when syntactic agreement was required, the plural continued to be used. "I keep my panties in a separate drawer".
Men's pants usually still have pantlegs. A bathing suit for men is not called "pants," but rather a bathing suit. Sometimes, in the garment called "shorts," not just "short" the pantlegs have become so short as to be almost imaginary, but that's not usually the case. In men's underwear the type called boxer shorts has definite pantlegs. The type sometimes called "briefs" used, sometimes to be called "BVDs," after a popular brand. These garments continue to be, grammatically, plural.
The word pants has a long history. It came to the English from the French, who had adopted some of the characters of the Italian [i]commedia dell'arte[/i] (16th-18th c.}, including one called "Pantalon." He was called, in Italian, Pantaleone, and was a kind of old fool, speaking Venetian dialect and wearing a grament with long trouser-legs. Such a name for one representing a typical Venetian was natural, since Pantalone or Pantaleone had become a common Venetian surname, probably because San Pantaleone was the patron saint of Venice (at least from the 10th century).

What does TILITING AT WINDMILLS mean?
Short answer:
Someone who is said to tilt at windmills goes on hopeless, idealistic quests, much like Don Quixote, the title character of the novel by Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. Don Quixote, who imagines himself a medieval knight, is so deluded that he imagines windmills are giants and begins to tilt, or joust with his lance, at them.(1605).
… and then there’s my version:
Just then they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that rise from that desert. And no sooner did George Quixote Bush see them that he said to his veep, "Fortune is guiding our affairs better than we ourselves could have wished. TRUE STORY FROM CHARLES
When I was a teen I worked for Safeway stores, first as a box-boy then a checker. One of my coworkers was, I now realize, an early version of a nerd - brilliantly intelligent but without a wit of social grace.
One day, while manning checkout counters next to each other I saw him raise a box of feminine douche, looking for a price as he reached for the intercom. I remember thinking, "No, no! Don't do it", but before I could get his attention he announced over the PA system, "Price check please on cherry flavoured douche, large". While he continued to hold down the PA open button the enraged patron said in a barely controlled voice, "It's scented you moron, not flavoured". As her rebuttle rang through the store I heard chuckles and sniggers and I think a large glass container of mayonaise drop to the floor.
As she marched, head down, out of the store I recall that I'd never seen the pastor's wife so red-faced or flustered before.

TRUE STORY FROM CHARLES
When I was a teen I worked for Safeway stores, first as a box-boy then a checker. One of my coworkers was, I now realize, an early version of a nerd - brilliantly intelligent but without a wit of social grace.
One day, while manning checkout counters next to each other I saw him raise a box of feminine douche, looking for a price as he reached for the intercom. I remember thinking, "No, no! Don't do it", but before I could get his attention he announced over the PA system, "Price check please on cherry flavoured douche, large". While he continued to hold down the PA open button the enraged patron said in a barely controlled voice, "It's scented you moron, not flavoured". As her rebuttle rang through the store I heard chuckles and sniggers and I think a large glass container of mayonaise drop to the floor.
As she marched, head down, out of the store I recall that I'd never seen the pastor's wife so red-faced or flustered before.

CHICKEN MOLÈ VIOLÁ
1 Chipotle Chile – Dried
1/4 cup Shortening
2 tablespoons Red Chiles – ground
2 cups Chicken Broth
4 Flour Tortillas -- cut in strips
1/4 cup Tomato Sauce
1/4 cup Onion – Chopped
1 tablespoon Raisins
1 tablespoon Almonds – Chopped
1 tablespoon Sesame Seed
1 tablespoon Pumpkin Seeds – Shelled
1 tablespoon Peanut Butter
1 1/2 teaspoon Sugar
1 1/2 teaspoon Oregano -- ground
1 1/2 teaspoon Cocoa Powder
1/2 teaspoon Anise Seed
1/4 teaspoon Cinnamon – ground
1/4 teaspoon Cloves -- ground
1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg – ground
1/4 teaspoon Allspice -- ground
1/4 teaspoon Ginger – ground
1/4 teaspoon Cumin -- ground, OR
1/2 teaspoon Cumin Seed
1 cup Chicken Broth
8 Chicken Breast Halves
Directions:
Cover chili with warm water. Let stand until softened, about 1 hour. Drain and finely chop. Heat shortening in 3-quart saucepan over medium heat until hot. Cook and stir ground red chilies in shortening until brown (add about 1/4 t water to prevent scorching if necessary); cool. Stir in 2 cups of chicken broth. Stir in remaining ingredients except the remaining 1 cup of broth and chicken. Heat to boiling; reduce the heat and cover. Simmer 30 minutes, stirring occasionally; cool. Place a small amount of the sauce into a blender container. Cover and blend on high speed until smooth. Repeat with the remaining sauce. Heat 1 cup of the sauce and the remaining chicken broth in a 12-inch skillet; reduce the heat. Place the chicken, skin sides up, in a single layer in the skillet. Cover and simmer until done, about 1 hour. Remove chicken to serving dish and keep warm. Measure the cooking liquid. In skillet combine 1 cup of the cooking liquid with the remaining sauce and heat to boiling, stirring constantly, and pour over the chicken.

Fruit Cobbler 1-pan, 1-hour.
a.k.a. Napalm for the Sweet-tooth.
1 cube butter (1/4 lb.)
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup milk
1 tsp Vanilla (optional)
1 pinch of salt
1 ½ cans (14 oz cans) pie fruit (or if fresh, mix with sugar and 2 tbs of flour before adding). Note: not all canned fruit is sweetened and thickened.
Preheat oven to 350·
Melt 1- cube butter in a 9 x 13 baking dish (microwave 30 seconds)
Mix together items 2-7 until smooth
Poor over melted butter – don’t stir
Poor fruit evenly over batter
Bake 50-60 minutes at 350 degrees.

Corn Chowder Recipe
Ingredients:
1 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 strip of bacon or 1 teaspoon of bacon fat
1/2 large yellow onion, chopped (about 1/2 cup)
1/2 large carrot, chopped (about 1/3 cup)
1/2 celery stalk, chopped (about 1/3 cup)
3 ears of sweet corn, kernels removed from the cobs (about 2 cups),
cobs reserved
1 bay leaf3 1/2 cups milk, whole or low fat
1 medium Yukon Gold potato, or Russet, peeled and diced
1/4 red bell pepper, chopped (about 1/4 cup)
Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
Method
1 In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the bacon strip (skip this step for vegetarian option, just add more butter) and fry until the bacon renders its fat, but doesn't begin to brown, 3 or 4 minutes. Add the onion and sauté for 4 to 5 minutes, until soft. Add the carrot and celery and cook for 4 or 5 more minutes.
2 Break the corn cobs in half and add them to the saucepan. Add the milk and bay leaf. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to a bare simmer. Cover the pot and cook for 30 minutes. Make sure the heat is as low as can be and still maintain a gentle simmer to prevent scalding the milk on the bottom of the pan.
3 Discard the cobs, the bacon strip, and the bay leaf. Increase the heat, add the potatoes, red pepper, 1 teaspoon of salt, fresh ground pepper to taste, bring to a simmer and reduce the heat to maintain a simmer for 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are almost fork tender.
4 Raise the heat, add the corn kernels and the thyme. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, and simmer for 5 minutes.

perfected through years of trial and error
I only share this with you because I love you. This is golden.
Yukon gold potatoes, about 2 small potatoes per serving.
wash and rinse the spuds
dice the potatoes - slice length-wise x 3,
then again x3 (so you now have 9 wedges),
dice these into even sized cubes,
(about the size of a fat blue berry)
place diced potatoes in a glass bowl
sprinkle lightly with fresh ground pepper and a pinch or 2 of kosher salt
microwave for 1 minute
stir potatoes and microwave for another minute
repeat until potatoes are slightly tender.
mince 1-2 green onions
in a non-stick sauce pan melt 2 tbs butter on low to medium heat
add tendered potatoes and onions
saute until golden brown. don't burn 'em or your llama won't pack for you
Just before removing from pan sprinkle garlic powder (not salt), generouly over spuds, season with more fresh ground pepper as desired.
If you use fresh garlic becauseyouthingyourebetterthanme, add it about a minute before you stop cooking to preserve the natural essence of the bulbofworship. (but i think the powder gives a better result).
If it makes you feel better, buy garlic powder from an asseen' monk who grows bulbs from his sweaty arm pits and sundries his perpetually spitooned mastications which can be heel-ground in the desert when rattlesnakes are in proximity but docile due to your ecumenical precience, to produce the organic-wasted ginger you so prize. But don't let my editorializing distract you from an herb, after all, you're the one eating it.
i dont' put on the Birkenstocks for dried or powdered garlic.

Mexican Chicken Stew
my own recepie
Preheat oven 325·
3 chicken breast halves or six thighs, (boneless & skinless preferred, skins are slimmy if left on)
1 medium onion, dice one half, quarter the other half
2 carrots, cut into large bite-size pieces
3 medium red potatoes, cut into quarters or large bite-size pieces
1 green bell pepper, cut half into strips, dice the other half
1 red bell pepper cut half into strips, dice the other half
1 jalapeño pepper, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
½ cup water, chicken stock or red wine
1 large can of whole tomatoes, 28 oz. or equivalent of fresh skinned tomatoes
1 small can red enchilada sauce, mild or medium, ~10 oz.
1-2 tbs canola or olive oil
1 cube or 1 tsp chicken bullion
2 tbs chili powder
2 tbs ground cumin
1 tsp oregano
½ cup rinsed & chopped fresh cilantro
Salt & pepper
Prepare in Dutch oven or oven-safe soup pot.
Brown chicken in oil, do not fully cook, season with salt and pepper, remove and set aside.
Add diced onion and peppers to pot and sauté on medium high heat until tender and lightly brown.
Add more oil if needed. Add minced garlic and sauté briefly then add ½ cup water, chicken stock or red wine to deglaze the pan, scrape any remaining bits from bottom of pan. Remove from heat. Stir in enchilada sauce and seasonings. Place chicken under sauce on bottom of the pan, add potato, onion, tomato with juice, carrot and remaining pepper strips on top. Cover with lid and place in oven for 1 hour at 325·.
Serve with rice is desired.
Substitute any root vegetable for potatoes.

This is a wonderful Asian soup with countless variations. Try using Basil instead of Cilantro for example. For more heat I like to use rooster sauce (SPIRACHA HOT CHILI SAUCE)
4 cups chicken stock prepared with 1 stalk of lemon grass (removed)
5 clove garlic, crushed
½ cup natural peanut butter
3 tbs curry powder or curry paste
1 tsp ground cumin
Dash of red pepper flakes
¾ cup loosely packed cilantro
1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
¾ cup sliced shallot or sweet yellow onion
2 tbs fish sauce (nam pla)
2 tbs fresh lime juice
1 jalapeño, sliced into rings, no seeds
1 large tomato, seeded and diced
In a large heavy-bottom pot over high heat, combine chicken stock, garlic, curry, cumin, and cilantro and red pepper flakes if desired. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes. Add coconut milk, shallots and chicken. Simmer and cook until chicken is cooked through.
Add fish sauce, lime juice, hot sauce, jalapeno, and tomato in the last ½ hour of cooking. Salt and pepper to taste.

- I'm semi-retired, single, live in Port Angeles by choice. I have one son. I grew up in Western and Central WA. I worked in accounting and customer service before getting my BA from The Evergreen State College in Multicultural Counseling. I went on to earn a Masters in Behavioral Science at Bastyr University. I worked in the mental health arena for a dozen or so years. Highlights include becoming an expert at DBT, a therapy developed for the treatment of personality disorders and those who are prone to suicide attempts and self-harm. I co-facilitated a state grant to treat meth addicts. We registered well-above average results, but unfortunetly the state did not extend funding.I've also worked as an educator at the local community college, Cultural Diversity, and for nursing assistant and as a reproductive health educator (sex ed). I recently settled a discrimination law suit, in my favor. I am happily single. My time and energy are focused on genealogy, politics and personal health.
